Drone, UAV, UAS, RPA or RPAS?

Manufacturers, regulators and operators all use slightly different terms. Here is what each actually means and who uses it.

💡 Why the terminology matters: regulators write rules using UAS and RPAS, not "drone". When reading GCAA documents, knowing that UAS covers the whole system — aircraft, control station and data link — tells you the rules apply to your ground equipment too, not just the aircraft.
