VTOL Hybrid
The newest class: a fixed-wing aircraft modified to take off and land vertically on lift rotors, then transition into efficient horizontal flight. It removes the biggest drawback of fixed-wing — needing a runway — while keeping its range and endurance, which is why it is expanding quickly across industrial and government work.

What makes a VTOL different?

What does that capability cost?
Higher mechanical complexity, extra weight because the aircraft carries two propulsion systems, and additional failure points concentrated in the transition between modes — the most dangerous moment in a VTOL flight.
When is a VTOL worth the premium?
In topographic, pipeline and coastal survey, where you need fixed-wing range but the launch site has no runway. If you do have a launch area, a conventional fixed-wing is simpler, cheaper and less failure-prone.
